"Haiku" - Dewane Hughes

Artist Statement

Nature finds a way. Much like humans, it is resilient and will fight to keep moving forward. Like how nature impacts us, we impact those around us with our actions. My prints use Japanese woodblock printing along with watercolor, which is suits the water imagery.  Water can be both calming and terrifying at the same time, much like life. The lines can be interpreted as chaotic or calming it depending on the viewers perspective. Like my prints my sculptures use wood, as a support, like its original state. The seeds I use are a reminder of the life that if given the chance will grow, if not it will perish, but if preserved it will last for a short time longer.

My latest body of work explores emotion and reaction. People take their emotions for granted, some lock them away, others express them freely with no hesitation. Everyone feels emotions, and everyone has something they react to, I want to harness this within the viewer and apply it to my work. People need an opportunity to shift their feelings to something different for that moment, and will seek it out. I want to provide that opportunity to the viewers and audience. Much like nature but also as a reminder to go out into nature.
