Threads of Our Lives

The ArtCentre of Plano located at 902 East 16th Street, Plano, TX 75074 is mounting a fiber art exhibit displaying work of artists from north Texas. It will be on display from 5/4 - 6/22/2024. The exhibition, 'Threads of Our Lives', represents members of:

  • The Dallas Handweavers & Spinners Guild

  • The Dallas Area Fiber Artists

  • The Fort Worth Weavers Guild

This is an outstanding display of many types of fiber art including: 2-D Art Concept, 3-D Sculpture/Basketry, Art Quilting, Fashion Accessories, Handspinning, Handwoven Clothing, Mixed Media, Textiles for the Home, and Wearable Art. The exhibition is juried by Amie Adelman, professor of fibers at the University of North Texas, and Suzy Jones, executive director of the ArtCentre of Plano.

Sarah Carson “Vivid Memories,” at the ArtCentre and the Courtyard Theater

Honoring Women's History Month, the ArtCentre of Plano will feature Sarah Carson, internationally recognized photographer.

The Dallas-based photographer has produced a large body of work in both black/white and color. She also has a collection of black/white images that have been over-painted with oil. Carson’s photographs range from Texas Rodeo and Red Canyonlands to New York Cityscapes, to English Castles, to an Italian Horse Race, to the marvel of Petra, and to Eastern Europe when it was still part of the Soviet Union.

Carson photographs chairs and trees as singular photographical subjects, and throughout all of her work finds a special connection to people.

Note: Sarah Carson's exhibition will be held at both the ArtCentre of Plano and the Courtyard Theater.

“First Squares & Old Crowns”

Award-winning fabric artist and leather pyrography portrait artist Jas Mardis returns to the ArtCentre of Plano in a dual exhibition honoring Black History Month to be held at the ArtCentre of Plano and the Plano African American Museum.

The ArtCentre will exhibit "First Squares and Old Crowns," a body of fabric art and prints that show a range of the artist's practice and include quilt piecework from his youth combined with his modern leather pyrography portrait and images from his "Just a Crown" series.

The Plano African American Museum will feature a collection of eight (8) quilts that Mardis has gathered for the "I Witness: Protest and Race Quilts." These fabric art quilts expound on the journey of African American experiences and racial strife through the artist's eyes.

A Voice Expressed - the Art of David Downs

David is a Plano based artist who uses a camera to gather the raw material for his creative images.  Selected by the ArtCentre of Plano as its 2018 Artist of The Year, he continues to grow and explore new techniques of expression utilizing a colorful style and unique perspectives on the world around him. Also, a passionate educator, David leads workshops around the country and speaks to photography groups about The Artist Within.

Whether gathering his raw data in the wild, on the streets, or even in his backyard, he looks for content that present life in memorable fashion. His new coffee table book, A Voice Expressed, is a collection of his images representing the first ten years of his photography journey.

James Gilbreath: Plano and Beyond

Born and raised in Texas, James’ love of art began in elementary school. Throughout public school he took every art class that was available and there weren’t that many in the fifties and sixties. In the fall semester of high school, 1965, at the age of 16, he finally had a chance to take art classes, where he was introduced to oil painting and his love of art grew to a whole new level. From that point to this he has always had paints, brushes and an easel and has produced paintings in each of those 58 years. He is a member of Plano Art Association and Artists Round Texas. He is also a member of the McKinney Plein Air Society.

The exhibition will be on view at the ArtCenter and online beginning Saturday, September 2. An opening reception will be at the ArtCenter on Friday, September 8 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

In what promises to be a blockbuster show, the ArtCentre has selected 12 highly recognized sculptors from throughout Texas to display their works in a two month exhibition. Texas Sculpts II follows the highly successful inaugural exhibition that highlighted last summer's arts calendar. The artists selected to participate in Texas Sculpts II come from throughout North and Central Texas and their works are extremely diverse in materials, ranging from wood to marble to fiber and more.

Sharon McCall and Victoria Peloubet

Sharon McCall of Plano and Victoria Peloubet of Fort Worth will exhibit their eclectic works of art at the ArtCentre of Plano's upcoming exhibition set to open on May 6, 2023. The two artists, connected by a shared grandchild, have extensive experience in the arts and have now been recognized by the Alan Barnes Fine Art Gallery in Dallas in 2022 and the Art Institute in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where they will exhibit in 2024. You will find a varied and collectible exhibition filled with whimsy, decorative art, and exquisite detail.

PISD AP Studio Exhibition

This annual exhibition showcases the culmination of student artistic growth throughout the art program within Plano Independent School District.

ArtCentre Executive Director Suzy Jones, says, “The Plano ISD Advanced Placement Art exhibition is always one of our most popular. The students create outstanding pieces that would make a statement in any quality art collection.” She adds, "The ArtCentre and Plano ISD are extremely grateful to Texas Health Presbyterian Plano for it generous support of this exhibition."

Mary Jo Dean, Director of Community Relations at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, says, "Texas Health Plano is pleased to support the PISD Senior Art Exhibit. As you can see by the works that are displayed, we are fortunate to have many extremely talented students in our schools and exemplary art teachers. Research shows that exposure to the Arts can help teens develop many positive skills and capacities that are valued by leaders and employers, such as persistence, collaboration, creative thinking, problem solving, motivation, and problem solving. In addition, studies demonstrate that Arts exposure can improve a teenager’s confidence and academic performance. Art can move, heal, inspire, and connect people. Art is an important part of our kid’s lives."

The artwork on display represents the Plano ISD Advanced Placement Studio Program, consisting of AP Drawing, AP Two-Dimensional Design, and Advanced Placement Three-Dimensional Design. A variety of work will be displayed, including photography, painting, ceramics and steel sculpture.”

According to PISD Exhibition Coordinator Colin McGrane, Plano East Sr. High School Campus Visual Arts Team Lead and District Secondary Arts Team Lead, “The Plano ISD program is among the most highly regarded in the nation.” He says, “Student portfolios which score well at the College Board’s review often rival those of college upper-level students.” He added, “The district’s fine arts focus is on student voice and critical thinking skills. PISD student artists are expected to create work from their perspective and be willing to experiment to push themselves to adapt and persevere.”
